Personal
statement
On 14 July 1970, I was born in Chengde, a famous tourist resort located in east of China with mild and pleasant climate. It is in this city where I was reared to be a warm, innovative, passionate, and active people with a passionate love for outdoor such as football, tennis, badminton, and
swimming. During the period of my study, I have been a member of university football and badminton team.
I finished my elementary and secondary education in my hometown. I first fascinated with making electronic devices in high school. Until then, I was content with making mechanical gadgets, from which I derived immense pleasure. As a child, I made my own toy gliders and vacuum cleaners. During making such things, I instinctively grasped some simple principles of aeromechanics. After I entered into junior high school, I began to make small electronic appliances by using electrical circuit boards. As I experimented for new inventions, I felt more and more constrained by the limited approaches. I aspired to make really user-friendly gadgets and devices that could be accepted on the market. So I chose mechanics as my major when I entered Shenyang Aeronautics University after a very competitive examination in 1988. During four years of undergraduate study, I did quite well in both academic and non-academic activities. I studied hard and received good grades too. I was also President of the student union in the mechanical department from 1990 to 1991. I got the bachelor degree with the honor of excellent graduate student in August 1992.
Upon graduation I started my work as an assistant engineer in Beijing Qing Yun Aviation Instrument Corporation. Because of the good performance, I won the most fruitful probationer honor and prize in two year's working period.
In September 1994, I entered into
Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics to continue my study for a master degree in the Electrical and Mechanical Institute. My advisor is Professor Xianqi Zeng. I chose Industrial Automation as my major for its interdisciplinary nature. With my effort and advisor's direction, I began to create a much larger variety of products that could serve a lot of different purposes. "A New Intelligent Financial Cashier System" and "Anti-counterfeit and Banknote-Counting Machine" are typical ones. The onset of Industrial Automation represents to me a major step forward in robotics technology.
A large part of my strength comes from my expertise in computer science. Making good use of my spare time, I taught myself a whole range of computer courses, among which were: Networking and Communications, Operating Systems, Data Structure and Computation, Computer Systems and
Principles, Software Engineering, Database, C++ Language, and Visual Basic. I was particularly fond of improving and upgrading mechanical devices by the combined use of computerized control technology and the programmable logical controller. My computer skills paid off when I embarked on my graduation project, for which I spent only 14 days instead of the three months as most of my classmates did. Taking myself to tasks in the real world, I worked on numerous part-time jobs while I was at the university. For these jobs, I usually utilized my computer skills and command of English. For example, I wrote computer programs for small companies and searched for information on the Internet for them.
Because my excellent performance, I went directly into the doctorate study in the Robotics Institute of BUAA, honorably supervised by Professor Qixian Zhang (The member of China Academy of Engineering) and Professor Tianmiao Wang (Director of the Institute), specializing in Robotics and automation. By means of my endeavor and perfect behavior, I have lead two scientific groups to carry out successfully 7 state key projects, and won many important awards in China. Taking full advantage of the seasoned guidance from my supervisors and other professors, I trained myself vigorously and fruitfully, as demonstrated by the amount and quality of my scientific research and technological achievements in my resume. From 1997 to 2000, I attended Robotic congresses in Hangzhou (Zhejiang Province), Hong Kong, Beijing and Yantai (Shandong Province) and made presentations in the conference. In addition, a book (co-author) and 20 papers have been published at home and abroad since I began my Ph.D. study. I also won three Microsoft Certified Professional Certificates through six strict tests and experiments in China Microsoft headquarters 1998. In June 28 2000, I graduated, and got my doctorate degree with very good mark. For further study and research on Robotics and Telerobotics, I came to Canada and did my research in Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at University of Western Ontario as a post-doctoral research fellow. Now my works are integrated on Robotic Cardiac Surgery, Haptic Control Interface, and Human-Machine interaction. It is interesting, huh? |
